Typical Mechanical Engineering Jobs
Mechanical Engineers are a highly specialized set of workers. They are educated in the most advanced topics governing physical science, including, but not limited to, properties of matter, electricity, physics etc. Their talents are in increasingly high demand by companies for a variety of jobs. Some of these are listed below;
- Design Engineers - As the name suggests, these engineers are involved in the design phase of production. They are employed by companies, usually with their peers, to work on new projects - perhaps a new model of an appliance that the company wants to release. They are given the difficult task of converting product requirements, usually coming from other parts of the organization, into a design that can be mass produced, for which they are usually well compensated. This often requires a very complete knowledge of physics, particularly electronics. Additional knowledge may be required, depending on the individual product. For example, design engineers working on a new processor model would need a very sound mastery of mathematics to be productive.
- Project Engineer - These engineers are usually exceptionally bright, possibly former design engineers, who have shown excellent management skills, along with proficiency in engineering. They are often employed to lead projects, such as the design of a new product, as in the example above. They, largely, supervise the work of other engineers but must pay full attention to the developments as they occur. The fact that the success of the project rests on their responsibility, they are expected to ensure that possible mistakes, made by lower level engineers, do not have catastrophic consequences. To do this, they must notice such errors early and step in to correct them. Additionally, they often bear the pressure of deadlines, and are required to motivate the team to get the work done, on time, and to directly aid the team if necessary. Given their great management responsibility, project engineers are often paid salaries comparable to those of executives.
- Sales Engineers - These mechanical engineers must combine their advanced technical knowledge with a proficiency in sales. They are often required to accomplish a wide variety of tasks. These include; (i) visiting potential clients and explaining, using their in-depth knowledge of the product, how they can benefit from it (ii) discuss individual needs, with each client, and come up with technical solutions (such as a particular model) for each situation (iii) offering price quotes, based on the technical specifications the clients requires, on the spot. As mentioned before, such engineers also need sales skills. The best candidates for jobs like these should also be really good at interacting with people, and being persuasive - key to success in any form of sakes work.
- Consulting Engineers - These engineers do not work for any specific employer but, rather, are hired on a per job basis. Despite the unstable nature of such employment, it attracts many of the brightest mechanical engineers due to the much higher pay rates it attracts. This often outweighs the risk of lack of employment for extended periods of time. In fact, it is not uncommon for such engineers to complete one, or two, large projects for an entire year, giving them the luxury of longer "holidays".
