Computers have become an essential part of our lives. Even if we, as individuals, have not allowed the advance of computer technology to enter our personal use, we are still under its effects. Companies, from your TV stations, to your local supermarkets, almost invariably employ computers in their operations. This is because computers have proven themselves to increase productivity, when used optimally, and, consequently, increase profits for these companies. They are found being used by office workers, used to perform complex tasks, such as monitoring as assembly line, etc. In addition to corporate use, computers have made education much more, accessible and, effective. Whereas, once, students had to crowd libraries in search of information, from outdated books, they can now use the internet to find an endless wealth of knowledge at their fingertips. In this way computers have revolutionized the way we learn. Finally, they have, of course, seen much use for recreation. Computer games, of all genres, are abundant and account for a significant portion of computer sales.
With all these uses for computers, it's no wonder that they have become in such high demand. Also in high demand, however, are improvements to existing computer models as the requirements of consumers become greater. New software is being developed to increase productivity and new games, and other recreational software, are being developed as well. These applications place great strain on current models, requiring that manufacturers increase the power of their devices. This is where computer engineering comes in.
Computer engineers fulfil a variety of requirements. They design new, better, processors, find ways to make things run faster, and more efficiently, come up with innovative measures to increase battery life (in the case of laptops, and handheld devices), and more. Additionally, they are expected to achieve these goals without significantly increasing the production costs, and consequently the price at which the model must be sold. These tasks are not easily accomplished and require a special kind of expertise, only available through specialized tertiary education. Computer engineering is exceptionally challenging because the work is usually done on very small components. This means that computer engineers, unlike their peers in the engineering industry, haven't got a lot of space to get their work done in. While this does make their jobs rather difficult, it places them in very high demand and their compensation rises accordingly. The majority of the richest people in the world became that way because of innovations in computing. This field is incredibly lucrative, and the demand for skilled computer engineers seems unlikely to ever slow down, as computers become more, and more, of an essential part of our daily lives.
